Bike sharing systems are now imagined as flexible extensions of a city's existing transit network. Whereas buses fill in the gaps of train networks, bike sharing systems can cost affordably fill in the smaller gaps of buses. However, unlike buses and trains, bicycle sharing systems are ridership-powered and as you can see below from our analysis of the South Station hub, subject to the elements of the seasons that encourage and discourage riding: sunlight, temperature and perhaps most persuasively, no additional charges for rides under 30 minutes.
